International Workshop on 5G RAN Design
in co-location with IEEE ICC, May 27, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Workshop Information

This workshop has taken place on May 27th 2016, with 13 technical paper presentations, 5 keynote speeches, and a panel discussion.
Workshop participants and speakers may download the presentations here (password-protected).

This workshop is jointly organized by the 5th Generation Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) projects METIS-II, FANTASTIC-5G, mmMAGIC and 5G NORMA, and aims to foster the discussion and consensus building on key 5G RAN design aspects. The workshop will provide the opportunity to share and discuss results from the mentioned projects and other 5G research activities, and to elaborate on how the 5G RAN design shall be best taken forth in the standardization which is expected to start in this time frame.

The workshop chairs solicit original, unpublished technical papers in particular in the following fields:

  • Physical layer concepts related to 5G, as for instance
    • waveforms, synchronization, numerology, unified frame structure concepts
    • means to obtain ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability
    • native support of D2D, V2X, broadcast and multi-cast
    • low-complexity massive MIMO solutions and related enablers
    • solutions for contention-based access and back-/fronthauling aspects

  • MAC, RLC, PDCP and RRC concepts, in particular related to a an efficient integration of multiple novel 5G air interfaces among each other, and with evolved legacy technology. Examples:
    • Novel resource management concepts, tailored to the support of a wider range of service and QoS requirements and novel communication forms such as D2D
    • Novel initial access and mobility concepts, in particular in the context of the integration and co-location of multiple novel and legacy air interface in 5G
    • Novel multi-connectivity approaches and related system enablers

  • General considerations on the control and user plane design in 5G RAN
