With the 5th generation of wireless networks in the horizon, the debate is open as to what such networks should look like. Challenges keep mounting as user expectations grow with competing demands for higher bit rates, vastly enlarged capacities, vanishing latencies, and uniform user experiences. This lecture considers 5G, not from the perspective of a manufacturer, operator, or user, but rather from the perspective of a researcher. With this perspective, the presentation is organized around various reflections touching on aspects that relate to 5G but that also have broader conceptual implications.

11:00Keynote Speech 2 : What Emerging 5G Deployment Concepts Teach Us about 5G RAN Requirements

This talk will examine the unique requirements in deploying highly localized commercial wireless services, such as is currently emerging in the US Citizens Broadband Radio Service (3.5 GHz) deployments, and will be even more significant in the higher bands contemplated for 5G. Emerging concepts, such as neutral Host and crowd-sourced networks have significant implications for the nature of the RAN design, and for the management of the RAN operation. Equally, the emergence of localized networks makes exclusive spectrum less practical, and shared spectrum more so. RAN designs that can adapt around other users in shared bands will be much more economic than those dependent on exclusive, interference-free spectrum for their effectiveness.

Apart from the usage of mmWave, ultra-dense networks are a critical enabler of 5G services. However the traditional network architecture used by today’s cellular networks does not allow the deployment of ultra-dense networks. Today’s network managements and transport infrastructure will not scale very well when we go to 5G and move towards creating such an ultra-dense network in mmWave. This talk will focus on new concepts on network architecture that can potentially help us overcome these hurdles in the future making network densification as simple as plug and play.

Manufacturing and future smart factories are considered as one of the most promising new application areas for mobile communications enabled by 5G. Corresponding use cases are often characterized by very high requirements in terms of reliability, latency, and security, thus imposing serious challenges on the 5G network design. At the same time, however, industrial environments like production plants have special boundary conditions, which may simplify certain aspects compared to current deployments and hence offer new opportunities for specific optimizations. This talk will discuss these aspects a bit in more detail, starting with an overview of promising industrial use cases and associated requirements, followed by the presentation of expected key building blocks for the 5G RAN design, and finally concluding with some insights on the specific characteristics and opportunities of industrial deployments.
